Driving is one of the vigilant activities in which a moment’s heedless behavior can easily prove fatal, others include handling a weapon. Driving and its concomitant affairs need to be handled in an meticulous manner, one of it includes issuance of driving licenses. Licenses shall be issued with diligence and it is essential to only allow those drivers on road, who have the necessary skillset (vision, hearing and reaction time) but which diminishes by age, thus elderly citizens should be tested again when the reach an age of let’s say, 60.
Driving requires the utmost care and attention which can be lacking in seniors. It is well known that human vision and hearing power reduces as the person trots toward dotage. Senior citizens also suffer from weak physical potency which can be an impediment when suddenly a need arises to steer the car or brake. Just like in top competitive motorsports such as Formula 1 and Nascar, one does not come across any driver beyond the age of 40, let alone senior citizens. Also, young people have extraordinary reaction times as compared to older people which is evident in all of automobile sports which require sudden actions.
Infact, any of the sports which require constant input by the user is only dominated by a person with brawny capabilities unlike golf which is slow and boring is generally for the oldies. Poor sensory feedback to an already feeble brain can aptly turn a automobile into a projectile, ready to bring about damage; but, if properly tested seniors are allowed on road then one need not worry of any detrimental results. Not only would it boost the confidence of older citizens but it would intrinscially propel them to maintain their health to obatin next license.
Thus, it should be mandatory for senior citizens to reapply for a driving license once the reach age of 60 or as devised by law, and they should be tested every 3 years in a road test. It is no way a discrimination as one may say, but an essential safety precaution for people on road.
