It is common saying that when in Rome, do what the Romans do. It is asserted by many that people visited in foreign lands should act according to the local culture. However, I am quite pessimistic about this notion, and it will be clear from the following essay.
To commence with, people believe that one should adopt local culture when they visit to place with different culture. This is because people think that not to dis-heart the locals. Although, this belief is associated with positive impact on society like showing respect to one’s traditions and be like one of them, it is also associated with negative impact on individual himself. For instance, one will loose his identity in order to make himself more similar with others. Also, it is difficult for locals to accept foreigners adopting their culture. Besides it, non native can loose his dignity.
Moving forward, I reside in one of the most scenic place of Pakistan where tourists travel a lot. I observe a couple close to my vicinity in swat, in order to enter the historical mosque in valley, they were dressed almost alike to locals but forgot to enter bare feet. They were immediately recognised non muslims, so people were not happy with them as they are prohibited to enter holy places of muslims.
In conclusion, I reiterate that embracing local culture by foreigners may be a sign of respect but one should have to know his limitatios, in order to not create problems for himself and most importantly, for locals.

It is common saying that when in Rome, do what the Romans do. It is asserted by many that people visiting foreign lands should act according to the local culture and customs, in order to show some respect. I partly agree with this notion, and it will be clear from the following essay.
To commence with, people believe that one should adopt local culture when they visit to a place with different culture. This is because not to dis-heart the locals. Moreover, this belief is associated with some positive impacts on the society, like showing respect to one’s traditions and be like one of them. For example, female tourists wearing head scarf in Muslim countries gain more respect as compared to bareheaded.
Moving forward, this trend is also associated with negative impacts. For instance, one will loose his identity in order to make himself more similar with natives. Also, it is difficult for locals to accept foreigners adopting their culture. To cite an example, I reside in one of the most scenic places of Pakistan, where tourist travels a lot. Therefore, I observe a couple close to my vicinity in the swat valley, in order to enter the historical mosque in the valley, they were dressed almost alike to locals but forgot to enter bare feet. They were immediately recognised as non muslims, therefore, people were not happy with them as they are prohibited to enter holy places of the Muslims.
In conclusion, I reiterate that embracing local culture by the foreigners may be a sign of respect, provided one should knows his limitation.
