Dutch Republic, formerly Republic of the United Netherlands, state whose area comprised approximately that of the present Kingdom of the Netherlands and which achieved a position of world power in the 17th century. The republic consisted of the seven northern Netherlands provinces that won independence from Spain from 1568 to 1609. Dutch is the official language. In modern times it is also called as Netherlands. Major religions are Catholic, Judaism.
